5 Best Road Trips from Chicago for Couples
When you’re in Chicago and the city life gets a little overwhelming, nothing beats hitting the open road for a romantic getaway. I’ve done it a few times myself with my partner, and honestly, each trip was a chance to reconnect, away from the noise. Here are a few spots that make for the perfect road trip, whether you’re looking for adventure, relaxation, or a mix of both.
1. Lake Geneva, Wisconsin (1.5-hour drive)
Lake Geneva is just one of those places that feels like a mini vacation without going too far. The lakefront views are stunning, and if you’re into a little luxury, there are plenty of charming bed-and-breakfast spots to choose from. My partner and I once rented a boat for the day-neither of us had any clue how to drive it, but it was hilarious figuring it out together. We spent the afternoon floating on the lake, sipping wine, and just talking. If you’ve never done a boat date, trust me, it’s worth it! And if you prefer staying on land, the Shore Path around the lake offers scenic views you can’t miss.
2. Starved Rock State Park, Illinois (2-hour drive)
For couples who enjoy a bit of nature (but aren’t hardcore hikers), Starved Rock is a perfect pick. The hiking trails are easy enough, and the waterfalls-especially after some rain-are super romantic. I remember the first time we visited, I didn’t bring the right shoes and ended up slipping in the mud. It was one of those “what else could go wrong?” moments, but honestly, we laughed about it for the rest of the trip. If you’re into picnics, bring some snacks along and find a quiet spot near one of the bluffs. The views, especially at sunset, are Instagram-worthy.
3. Saugatuck, Michigan (2.5-hour drive)
If artsy vibes and beaches sound like your thing, Saugatuck is a gem. The town has this laid-back, bohemian feel-perfect for a relaxing weekend. My favorite part? The art galleries. Even though I’m no art expert, it’s fun to walk through and pretend I know what I’m talking about. Oval Beach is another must-visit if you’re looking for some quiet time by the water. Once, we found a secluded spot and spent the afternoon just laying in the sand, soaking up the sun. There’s something about the simplicity of a beach day that’s so refreshing.
4. Door County, Wisconsin (4-hour drive)
Now, this one’s a bit of a longer drive, but Door County is worth every mile. It’s often called the “Cape Cod of the Midwest,” and once you get there, you’ll see why. The coastline views are breathtaking. We rented bikes and explored the local wineries-yes, wine in Wisconsin! I didn’t know that either until we went. If you’re both foodies, you’ve got to try a fish boil. It’s a local tradition where they cook whitefish in a huge pot over an open flame. At first, I wasn’t sure about the whole “boiled fish” thing, but it’s actually delicious.
5. Galena, Illinois (3-hour drive)
Galena has this old-time charm that makes you feel like you’ve stepped back in time. The cobblestone streets, historic buildings, and cute shops make it a cozy place for a couples’ getaway. We stayed in a quaint little inn that had a fireplace in the room (total romantic movie vibes, right?). There’s also a hot air balloon ride you can take-something we’ve yet to try, but it’s definitely on our list. Walking through the town with a cup of coffee in hand and no real plans for the day is the kind of simple, slow-paced vibe that makes Galena such a perfect escape.
